The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its planned nationwide demonstration against the recent 50% increase in telecom charges.
This comes after a meeting with government officials at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday night.
Speaking to press following the meeting, NLC President Joe Ajaero stated that the government agreed to form a bigger committee to study the entire tariff structure.
In his own words:
“We highlighted that the NLC is Africa’s largest organisation, and that no stakeholder consultation can exclude us while remaining valid.
“On that basis, they agreed to form a broader committee to ensure a fair and inclusive agreement, using the entire tariff structure as a model to produce a realistic and all-inclusive agreement.”
“So the committee will consist of five representatives from each sides and is scheduled to report back in two weeks.
“That will determine the next course of action and the method of engagement. The symbolic step of sending letters tomorrow will be postponed until the committee’s decision is reached.
“The outcome of such a committee is what will determine our next line of action in terms of protest, in terms of boycott, and in terms of even withdrawal of services, which are the three issues we put online.”
